What are gendered associations with our (dance) practices?

How do we craft meaning? How are we the craft and the crafters?

How has/are your dance practices devalued?

“Unlike ‘high art,’ she says, which can alienate the everyday person, crafting can be done by anyone who wants to learn.”

Gender equality is not accomplished when girls and women appropriate ‘masculine’ activities, sports, and professions.

We must ask why men and boys have not enthusiastically taken up ‘feminine’ activities, sports, and professions.

Making for self,

which is creating for no monetary gain,

is an act of activism/self care = craftivism

“…using softness to combat a harsh reality of separation…”

Ideas & issues we are pondering to expand the work:

  • Subversive potential of male/non-binary crafters

  • Incorporating indigenous perspectives

  • Figuring out our stance, authority, and responsibility within a racialized course of history

  • How do we use the broadness of scope as an opportunity for learning and expansion?

Uniformity

“My craftivism can be different than your craftivism and that’s OK.”

“Craftivism is a way to make big issues tangible.”

“Is dance material?”
